In the late 1960’s, it would often be near midnight when several close friends and I would come back to my house on June Drive and begin basketball games on the blacktop court that doubled as our driveway. As I think back on it, I can only imagine how irritating the rhythmic pounding of the ball against the pavement must have been to my mother and grandparents as they were trying to sleep inside. They probably should have told me that it was too late. But they didn’t.
I remember when, at fifty years old, while in the process of taking the risk to start a new business, there was tremendous uncertainty. The reality of having no regular income was a daunting prospect. Diane could have justifiably put up resistance and told me that “it was just too late”. But her unwavering support meant that she didn’t.
I have recently asked the question: “Can a seventy year old man change what he is primarily “about”? (If you missed it, you can read why in my previous blog post https://www.skipburke.com/being-about/ )
Or is it too late?
I have found great encouragement from these words of Jesus which seem to tell me “No, it’s never too late.”
“… A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard, ‘Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down; why does it use up the ground?’ But he answered and said to him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it. And if it bears fruit, well. But if not, after that you can cut it down.’ ”
Luke 13:6-9 NKJV
In John 15, Jesus clearly tells us that God is the vineyard keeper. And here in Luke, He is not only saying “it’s not too late” for the fig tree, but He is saying that God, the vineyard keeper, will do the work to give it new life and the opportunity to produce fruit. Wow!
I am grateful to have discovered a meaningful guide as I am trying to let The Vineyard Keeper change what I am primarily “about.”
Robert J. Morgan, author of the Red Sea Rules, has written Mastering Life Before It’s Too Late. I have found this scripturally based guide to be instrumental in helping me to see what my priorities are and to reorient them… helping me to be more “about” the Father’s business.
I don’t know if you feel that what you are “about” is exactly what it should be. I hope that you do. Or just maybe you feel there is room for adjusting your primary focus…before it’s too late. In case it might be helpful, Diane and I would love to send you a copy of this guide. No cost, no obligation, just words that our Heavenly Father might also use to loosen the soil…fertilize the ground around your roots too…and give you a chance to bear more fruit.

Although we were not specifically told that the fig tree actually did bear fruit in the fourth year, I firmly believe that you can dribble the ball, start the business, or start bearing more fruit, because The One in Charge says “It’s not too late!”
I’m actually a pretty emotional guy…inside. Outward expression…not so much. Maybe that…
